Course Description: 

Many research studies highlight the ongoing presence of racism and oppression worldwide, including within Canada. A closer examination of personal and professional environments may reveal disparities in treatment, outcomes, and lived experiences among different groups.

Is it simply “luck”?
“Laziness”?
“Just the way it is”?

Through introspective exercises, group discussions, activities, and case studies, this ARAO training session explores the concepts of oppression and racism, challenging stereotypes and biased frameworks. This session also equips participants with practical ARAO strategies to apply in both personal and professional settings.


Learning Objectives: 

1. Gain a deep understanding of the constructs of oppression and racism, with a focus on historical contexts.
2. Develop an awareness of how oppression and racism manifest and persist on both micro and macro levels across various systems in Canada.
3. Understand the harmful effects of racism and oppression on individuals, organizations, and societies.
4. Gain a thorough understanding of privilege and intersectional identities, and how these influence people’s lived experiences, perspectives, and outcomes.
5. Acquire practical strategies to incorporate self-awareness and anti-racist, anti-oppressive practices into both professional and personal spaces.

2. Identify the ways oppression and racism show up at both individual and systemic levels within Canadian society.
