Headings and Sub-headings
Every good style package includes headings you can use to format your content like a pro. Check out this cascade of GRT headings:

In practice, you’ll want to use headings to break your content into easily-digestible sections. We like to use <h2>
, <h3>
, and <h4>
tags to accomplish this1; be on the lookout for these tags as you browse the sample styles on this page!
Body Text: Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book.
Lists
People love lists because they provide clear breaks in the visual hierarchy and are easy to scan. Lists formatted with GRT are beautifully spaced and will keep your visitors engaged and moving down the page.

Blockquotes
When including a quote or citation in your content, be sure to use <blockquote>
styles for the most savvy presentation. Consider this profound statement about typography:
This is a blockquote. Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry.
– Citation

Code Formatting
You’ve already seen inline code styling via the <code>
tag a few times on this page. GRT also provides tidy preformatted code styling via the <pre>
tag, as seen in this snippet of fictitious PHP code:
class golden_ratio_typography { public $phi = false; public $fonts = array(); public function __construct() { $this->phi = (1 + sqrt(5)) / 2; } }

Trauma-Informed Crisis Intervention
Trauma-Informed Crisis Intervention: Individual and Team Responses
Live Online (One Day) and/or Live In Person (Two Day) Instructor: Steve Hall Safety Consulting
A trauma-informed approach can be put into practice in any type of organization and is much different from trauma-specific interventions or treatments that are designed to address the consequences of trauma and to facilitate healing.
A client who is seen as a hostile and aggressive person can instead be viewed as someone who might be threatened, defensive, frightened and feeling vulnerable through a staff member’s perceptual realignment.
Trauma is so prevalent that service providers should naturally assume that many of the people to whom they provide services have in some way or another been affected by trauma. Although trauma is often the root cause behind many after public health and social issues
that challenges our society service providers all too often fail to make the link between the
trauma and the challenges and problems their clients, patients, service users and even
coworkers experience.
Staff can learn to re-interpret behavior more accurately and intervene effectively as they feel better prepared. Personal awareness, sound preparation and scripts (team communication strategies) for leaving an unsafe situation and team intervention or deployment are all areas
of focus in these workshops.
SHSC training emphasizes this practice as a means of safer and more compassionate crisis response by emphasizing a person-centered, strengths-based thinking and language.Â
In this training we explore:
• Personal Awareness – What staff bring to work and how they respond.
• Trauma Informed Awareness & Application – Realigning our viewpoints.
• Interpersonal Awareness – The art of communication and engagement.
• Team Mobilization & Response – Codes and scripts to navigate situations.
• Post Crisis Strategies – Tools for all, including clients and families.
Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (Crisis Prevention Institute)
Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (Crisis Prevention Institute)
Blended Learning: Self-Paced (Online) + Live In Person / Live Online
Instructors: Nicki Casseres / Dana Kamin / Laura Sanford / Julian Munsayac
Due to the Crisis Prevention Institute’s delivery restrictions regarding their Nonviolent Crisis Intervention program, Toronto Hostels Training Centre is only able to provide this training to THTC members. Should you wish to become a member of THTC, please refer to the Become a Member page.Â
Toronto Hostels Training Centre is currently offering Nonviolent Crisis Intervention 2nd Edition. THTC will begin offering Nonviolent Crisis Intervention 3rd Edition in February 2024.
Crisis Prevention Institute’s Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training focuses on verbal de-escalation, intervention, and prevention strategies to address escalating situations in social service settings. You will learn strategies to recognize and respond at the earliest points possible in a crisis, and to use a variety of verbal and nonverbal techniques to keep yourself, participants and the person in crisis safe. Setting limits, professional and ethical decision-making, using an effective team approach to intervene, and re-establishing communication with individuals who have escalated, are primary learning objectives.
This Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training will be provided in a Blended Learning format consisting of:
- Self-Paced Online Modules:
Once registered, you will receive a link from the Crisis Prevention Institute to access the online, self-paced portion of the Nonviolent Crisis Intervention course. This link will be sent out approximately 14 days prior to the live in-person or live online portion of the course (“Day 2 outlined below). (If you register within 14 days of the course, you will receive the link within 2-3 business days of your registration). When you receive your Registration Confirmation email from Toronto Hostels Training Centre, you will also receive the CPI 2nd Edition Learner’s Guide as a PDF attachment. Please use this guide to complete the self-paced modules, which typically take approximately 3-6 hours to complete. You can complete the self-pace modules at your own pace and have the ability to pause and revisit previous material as needed. There is a brief, multiple choice quiz at the end of the self-paced learning that must be successfully completed at least 24 business hours prior to your Live in Person / Live Online Day Two training session. Please note that if the self-paced modules and quiz are not completed at least 24 business hours prior to Day Two, you will be unable to attend your Live in Person / Live Online session. If this occurs, you will be subject to a $40 administrative fee to reschedule your Day Two Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training (as per THTC policy).
- Live in Person / Live Online Day Two:
The live portion (either in person or online via Zoom) will take place with a certified Nonviolent Crisis Intervention instructor to further understand and apply the concepts and models introduced in the online self-paced modules. Please note that Toronto Hostels Training Centre does not teach physical holds and focuses on verbal (i.e. hands-off) interventions, as well as Disengagement Skills (formerly ‘Personal Safety Techniques’). You will have the opportunity to apply and practice key concepts on case scenarios from the social service sector.
Certificate of Completion: Upon completion of the self-paced and live (in person or online) training, you will receive your Blue Card in CPI Nonviolent Intervention. You will also receive a PDF letter through email to provide to your (potential) employer. The Blue Card and CPI Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Training Participant Workbook (2nd Edition) will be mailed out to the address on file for your THTC membership (i.e., if you register through your organization’s membership, the booklet and Blue Card will be mailed out to the address on file for that organization).
 Learning Objectives:
- Identify the behavior levels that contribute to the development of a crisis and choose an appropriate staff intervention for each level.
- Identify verbal and non-verbal techniques which can help to avoid or respond to escalating situations.
- Identify and apply hands-off interventions to respond to physical risk behaviors.
- Provide for the Care, Welfare, Safety, and Security of everyone involved in a crisis.
- Apply the material covered in training to real-life situations.
- Provide means to re-establish communication with an escalated individual, strengthen team responses after a crisis, and lessen the likelihood of future crises.
Note:
THTC requires participants to sign a waiver for any training that involves physical engagement and/or activity. The waiver releases THTC of liability, assumption of risk and indemnity. It is the responsibility of the participant to behave in a professional manner and relay any physical concerns to the facilitator at the onset of the workshop. If the waiver has not been signed, we are unfortunately unable to accept participants into this training.
Participants must attend the full two (2) portions of training. Please wear comfortable clothing and running shoes.
This certificate is valid of 1 year.

Trauma-Informed Crisis Intervention: Individual and Team Responses
Live Online (One Day) and/or Live In Person (Two Day) Instructor: Steve Hall Safety Consulting
A trauma-informed approach can be put into practice in any type of organization and is much
different from trauma-specific interventions or treatments that are designed to address the
consequences of trauma and to facilitate healing.
A client who is seen as a hostile and aggressive person can instead be viewed as someone
who might be threatened, defensive, frightened and feeling vulnerable through a staff
member’s perceptual realignment.
Trauma is so prevalent that service providers should naturally assume that many of the
people to whom they provide services have in some way or another been affected by trauma.
Although trauma is often the root cause behind many after public health and social issues
that challenges our society service providers all too often fail to make the link between the
trauma and the challenges and problems their clients, patients, service users and even
coworkers experience.
Staff can learn to re-interpret behavior more accurately and intervene effectively as they feel
better prepared. Personal awareness, sound preparation and scripts (team communication
strategies) for leaving an unsafe situation and team intervention or deployment are all areas
of focus in these workshops.
SHSC training emphasizes this practice as a means of safer and more compassionate crisis
response by emphasizing a person-centered, strengths-based thinking and language.
