This level-two workshop builds upon foundational communication tools to address the high-pressure realities of Ontario’s shelter and community health systems. Designed specifically for frontline staff, this session focuses on navigating complex client interactions, including chronic housing instability, multi-morbidity, and acute emotional distress, without the need for a clinical background.
Through an intensive “hands-on” approach, participants will practice advanced support-based interventions and the integration of trauma-informed principles into high-stress, daily frontline work. The afternoon is dedicated to analyzing real-world case studies and participating in interactive simulations that mirror the unique challenges of the Toronto shelter system, providing staff with a “toolbox” of practical responses for immediate use.
Advanced Counselling Skills Training – Course Learning Objectives:
- Learn to maintain clinical neutrality and professional boundaries when working with high-acuity clients or those experiencing long-term housing instability.
- Move beyond the basics of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) to apply specific distress tolerance and chain analysis techniques during crisis interventions.
- Evaluate complex social histories to develop person-centered support plans that align with Ontario’s “Housing First” and Harm Reduction frameworks.
- Develop self-regulation tools for the practitioner to prevent vicarious trauma while managing challenging behavioral presentations in shelter environments.
Advanced Counselling Skills Learning Outcomes:
- Complex Problem Solving: Participants will be able to dissect multi-layered client crises and apply immediate, evidence-based counselling interventions.
- Enhanced Clinical Communication: Staff will gain proficiency in using “Change Talk” and advanced reflective listening to support clients who are hesitant to engage with the health system.
- Sector-Specific Mastery: Graduates will feel equipped to navigate the unique ethical dilemmas and safety protocols inherent in Ontario’s frontline health and community settings.
- Application Excellence: Through rigorous role-play, participants will demonstrate increased confidence in handling high-stress interactions without compromising the therapeutic relationship.
