Working in community-based settings often requires navigating complex safety risks, from unpredictable environments to legal reporting duties and client crises. This interactive training is designed specifically for social service workers, case managers, housing support staff, and other frontline professionals who provide services in shelters, supportive housing, and community outreach settings.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Identify and manage personal, client, psychological, and physical safety risks
  • Apply trauma-informed, culturally safe, and ethical practices in challenging situations
  • Conduct safety assessments and create individualized safety plans
  • Navigate safety considerations during home visits, community outreach, and office-based interactions
  • De-escalate tense situations using proven verbal and non-verbal techniques
  • Understand legal duties around privacy, reporting, and interactions with police and emergency services
  • Safely respond to incidents involving violence, drug use, mental health crises, or suicide risks
  • Document safety incidents, “near misses,” and occurrence reports effectively

Through practical scenarios, risk assessment tools, and hands-on exercises, this training will empower participants to recognize risks early, respond appropriately, and prioritize both their own safety and the wellbeing of the individuals they serve.
