Managing Safety in the Community: Strategies for Frontline Workers

This workshop is designed for social service workers, case managers, housing support staff, and other frontline professionals working in shelters, supportive housing, and community outreach settings. Participants will explore best practices for navigating safety risks and responding to crises while maintaining trauma-informed, ethical, and culturally safe approaches.

The session will include interactive discussions, practical scenarios, and hands-on activities that equip participants with the tools and strategies to manage safety risks in various environments. By the end of the workshop, participants will be prepared to apply these skills in real-life situations, ensuring both their personal safety and the wellbeing of the individuals they serve.

Learning Objectives: 

  • Identify and manage personal, client, psychological, and physical safety risks in frontline setting.
  • Apply trauma-informed, culturally safe, and ethical practices during safety-related incidents.
  • Conduct safety assessments and develop individualized safety plans for clients.
  • Navigate safety considerations during home visits, community outreach, and office-based interactions.
  • De-escalate tense situations using verbal and non-verbal communication techniques.
  • Understand legal duties related to privacy, reporting, and interactions with police and emergency services.
  • Safely respond to incidents involving violence, substance use, mental health crises, or suicide risk.
  • Document safety incidents, “near misses,” and occurrence reports effectively

  • Navigate legal responsibilities in emergency situations, including reporting duties and interactions with law enforcement.
  • Develop strategies for documenting safety-related incidents to ensure accurate records and follow-up actions
