Delivered in a blended format, learners complete self-paced online modules first, then attend a one-day, instructor-led practice session in Toronto to work with real equipment and receive real-time feedback.
What This First Aid Course Covers
The program prepares participants to respond to a wide range of medical emergencies, including:
- Spinal injuries
- Fractures and other injuries
- Major bleeds
- Heart attack and stroke
- Diabetic emergencies
- Overdose response, including the use of Naloxone
- Shelter-specific case scenarios
How the Blended Format Works
This course is designed to fit the schedules of busy shelter and social service teams:
- Learn the skills online at your own pace
- Complete quizzes to check your progress
- Attend one full day in person for an instructor-led practice session

Learning Objectives
- Conduct comprehensive Primary and Secondary Surveys.
- Respond to heat-induced emergencies, including heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.
- Manage multiple injury situations and prepare for advanced care.
- Master adult, child, and infant resuscitation (CPR).
- Use a Defibrillator (AED) with confidence, along with other advanced rescue equipment.
Learning Outcomes
- Assess and respond to emergency situations using Primary and Secondary Surveys while staying calm under pressure.
- Manage heat-related emergencies and injuries such as major bleeds, spinal injuries, and fractures.
- Perform CPR and use AEDs effectively as part of a team.
- Treat and manage life-threatening emergencies including choking, heart attack, stroke, diabetes, and overdose (including Naloxone administration).
