Course Description:

In our society, aging in place is not only about comfort but is essential to preserving dignity, autonomy, and community connections for the older population. This workshop offers a unique social service perspective on empowering individuals to age gracefully and safely in their own homes.
Drawing from social services, community outreach, and advocacy, this workshop goes beyond physical modifications to explore the holistic needs of aging individuals. Through interactive discussions, case studies, and practical exercises, participants will deepen their understanding of the social, emotional, and practical aspects of aging in place, and learn how to support individuals in maintaining independence and quality of life in their own homes.

Supporting Aging in Place – Course Learning Objectives: 

  1. Understand the importance of aging in place for older adults and its impact on dignity, autonomy, and community.
  2. Explore the social, emotional, and practical factors that contribute to successful aging in place.
  3. Learn about the role of social services and community support in empowering individuals to live independently.
  4. Discuss the challenges older adults face when aging in place and how to address those challenges effectively.

Supporting Aging in Place Learning Outcomes: 

  1. Participants will gain knowledge of aging in place from a holistic perspective, including its social and emotional aspects.
  2. Participants will be equipped with strategies to assist older individuals in maintaining autonomy while aging in place.
  3. Participants will be able to identify and address the challenges that older adults face when trying to remain in their homes.
  4. Participants will understand the role of community services and resources in supporting aging individuals.
