ITC: Understanding & Managing Aggressive Behaviour (U.M.A.B.) Two-Day Blended Training – Blended Learning

Course Description:

This essential two-day program equips frontline workers with the skills to effectively manage aggressive and violent client behaviour while adhering to legislative policies and service mandates. Through a combination of theoretical learning and experiential practice, participants will gain a thorough understanding of self-protection, disengaging skills, and physical intervention within the continuum of behaviour management. The course emphasizes both verbal communication and physical techniques, helping participants safely and effectively manage crises in direct care service settings. Participants will approach interactions with positivity, openness, and respect for clients’ dignity while upholding the highest safety standards and compliance with legislated policies and procedures.
Punctuality is essential, as any time missed will result in the participant not receiving a certificate. Comfortable clothing and running shoes are required. Participants will also receive a training manual and a certificate valid for one year.

Learning Objectives: 

  1. Defining Aggression and understanding the two types of Aggression.
  2. Recognize theories of aggression and the biological, psychological, socio-cultural, and environmental factors that contribute to behaviour.
  3. To increase self-awareness and interpersonal awareness of anger and crisis with all participants.
  4. Differentiate between the physiological, behavioural, and psychological cues during the Continuum.
  5. Identify client behavioural changes and appropriate intervention strategies.
  6. Effectively manage a “Continuum of Behaviour” using approved verbal de-escalation techniques.
  7. The importance of debriefing for both the individual and staff after an incident.
  8. Importance of positioning and environmental awareness.

Learning Outcomes: 

  1. Recognize and assess client behaviour to identify appropriate intervention strategies.
  2. Apply verbal de-escalation techniques to defuse aggressive and violent situations.
  3. Develop skills to effectively identify, assess, and manage a “continuum of behaviour” and techniques for diffusing and controlling crisis situations using approved behaviour management strategies.
  4. Demonstrate the ability to create a mutually safe and secure environment while managing challenging client behaviour.
  5. Learn how to approach a situation safely, and if things take a turn and become unsafe, you will understand how to keep yourself safe by using self-protection and disengagement techniques.
